Top Senator Says She Helped Her Supporter Get a Fake KCSE Certificate to Land a Police Job

Eighteen recruits disqualified at Kiganjo Police Training College over fake academic documents included a young campaigner whom Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu says she helped to join the police service using a forged Form 4 certificate.

Nyamu made the disclosure on Friday, October 23, during a Radio Generation interview, where she was making the case for better access to basic education among Nairobi’s youth.

She said the man, aged about 28 or 29, was a staunch supporter who lacked the minimum qualification needed to join the police, and that she wanted to reward his loyalty.

According to her account, a certificate was forged and he was admitted to Kiganjo, with her circle celebrating the placement. The mood changed when he called her from a police station after being arrested for forgery along with 17 others.

She used the episode to argue that every Nairobian, including young mothers heading to TVET institutions, should hold a Form 4 certificate, calling it part of the woman representative’s work.

The senator is seeking the Nairobi woman representative seat on a UDA ticket and wants Form 4 set as the minimum academic qualification.

She faces incumbent Esther Passaris of ODM, who has held the seat since 2017, as well as former LSK president Faith Odhiambo of Linda Mwananchi and Millicent Omanga of DCP.

Her remarks drew sharp reaction online. Several Kenyans noted that she is an advocate of the High Court, while others called for legal action. Peterson Mirichi argued that she should face arrest for aiding and abetting a crime.

Presenting a forged certificate is an offence under Section 349 of the Penal Code, which carries up to three years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.

In April, 13 Administration Police recruits were charged at the Milimani law courts with forging KCSE certificates and were expelled.
