Kokomba, popularly known as Sodom and Gomorrah, offers nothing of lasting value to the Ga‑Dangme
In an Official Facebook Post on 23 October 2026, the Ga‑Dangme Kingdom issued a strong statement calling for the complete clearance of Old Fadama, widely referred to as Sodom and Gomorrah. The post argued that the settlement, which covers over 31 hectares along the Odaw River and Korle Lagoon, has become a burden on Accra and the Ga people rather than a source of sustainable benefit.
The investigation behind the post revealed that Old Fadama began expanding in the 1980s when migrants and refugees, particularly Konkombas fleeing ethnic conflict, settled in the area. Over time, the population swelled to more than 100,000, with makeshift wooden kiosks and shacks forming a dense, flood‑prone community. While the settlement functions as a major hub for trading, scrap dealing, and informal recycling, the post stressed that these economic gains are fragile compared to the heavy costs of crime, flooding, disease, and environmental destruction.
The report documented repeated police operations against armed robbery, illegal arms trading, and violent ethnic clashes, alongside widespread sanitation challenges and toxic exposure from e‑waste burning. It also noted the stigmatizing label “Sodom and Gomorrah,” which has long been associated with vice and disorder. Despite community efforts to improve livelihoods through recycling and composting, the post insisted that the settlement undermines the ecological system of the Korle Lagoon and erodes Ga heritage.
The Ga‑Dangme Kingdom urged youth, traditional leaders, and politicians not to cling to short‑term gains but to restore the land to its original purpose. They argued that reclaiming the wetlands and lagoon would protect Accra from flooding, reduce disease, and open space for planned development and recreation under Ga‑Dangme custodianship. The post concluded that the dangers of continued occupation — crime, health burdens, and environmental damage — outweigh any benefits, and that complete clearance is the only way forward.
