Geoffrey Mosiria draws cheers from crowds during Eastleigh collapse site visit

Former Nairobi County Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria received a warm welcome from crowds of residents during his visit to the Eastleigh building collapse site on Friday, October 23, 2026.

Video shared by Mosiria showed residents cheering as Mosiria arrived at the scene, where rescue teams were working through the rubble of a multi-storey building that had collapsed along 9th Street.

In the footage, a crowd surrounded Mosiria, with some people lifting him above their heads as they cheered. He was later transported on a boda boda as a large group of people moved alongside him through the area.

The reception unfolded as emergency responders continued searching the collapsed structure amid fears that construction workers and other people could be trapped beneath the debris.

The crowds appeared eager to get close to Mosiria, with videos capturing the enthusiastic reception he received during the visit.

His arrival came amid a tense atmosphere at the scene, where residents had gathered to follow developments as rescue operations continued.

Police had earlier used tear gas to disperse onlookers and create room for emergency teams to carry out their work.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja was also at the scene overseeing the response to the disaster.

Mosiria’s visit came two days after he was removed from his position as Nairobi County Chief Officer for Public Participation, Citizen Engagement and Customer Service on October 21.

His removal followed an administrative reshuffle by Sakaja, shortly after Mosiria publicly expressed interest in contesting the Nairobi governorship in the 2027 elections.

The former county official’s reception at the collapse site drew attention on social media, with footage showing crowds cheering him as he moved through the area.

The building collapsed in the early afternoon on Friday, October 23, prompting an emergency response as authorities worked to establish the number of people affected.

Construction workers who escaped the collapse said they had noticed cracks and heard unusual noises before the structure came down.

Some survivors also expressed concern about colleagues they had not seen after escaping the building.

Rescue teams continued working at the scene as authorities appealed to members of the public to keep access routes clear to facilitate the operation.
