Debibi United’s Pitch Is Meant for Cassava Plantation, Not Football — Petros Koukoura

We have reached a point where even foreign coaches are openly criticizing our football pitches, yet some people continue to shout, “Support local football!” But the big question is, what exactly are fans being asked to support? Should people spend their hard-earned money to watch football on pitches that may not provide the proper conditions for players to perform at their best?

Supporting local football is important, but that support must come with improvement, accountability, and a genuine commitment to quality. Fans deserve better facilities, players deserve safe playing surfaces, and coaches deserve environments where they can properly prepare their teams.

However, while Koukoura’s criticism may reflect genuine concerns about the pitch, the way such comments are expressed also matters. There is a difference between pointing out a problem to encourage improvement and making statements that can be seen as disrespectful to Ghanaian football.

Another issue we must discuss is our attitude toward local professionals. Ghana has talented and qualified coaches who deserve opportunities to prove themselves. Yet, some clubs appear more willing to spend huge sums on foreign coaches while local coaches struggle to receive the same level of trust and investment.

This does not mean foreign coaches should be rejected. Rather, clubs should judge coaches based on their qualifications, experience, and performance, not simply their nationality.

Ghanaian football needs more than slogans about supporting local teams. It needs better pitches, proper investment, competent management, and respect for local talent.

The real question is this: if we want fans to support Ghana football, shouldn’t we first give them a product worth paying to watch.
