“Hakuna Madereva,” Kenyan in US Reveals How Much Trailer Drivers Earn Per Week
A Kenyan content creator based in the United States has revealed a lucrative opportunity in the American trucking industry, where several trailers belonging to a Kenyan businessman remain parked due to a shortage of drivers.
Fanya Mambo Kinuthia shared the information after visiting a trailer park in Kansas City, where he met fellow Kenyan Ernest Modara, a businessman who owns several long haul trailers, including 53 foot units. According to Kinuthia, many of the trucks remain idle because there are not enough drivers to operate them.
During their conversation, Kinuthia asked Modara how much a trailer driver earns in a week. The businessman disclosed that drivers can earn approximately $2,500 weekly, equivalent to about KSh 280,000.
Kinuthia explained that the amount could translate to close to KSh 1 million in monthly earnings, drawing attention to the potential financial rewards available to drivers who secure such employment in the United States.
However, Kinuthia pointed out that the challenge is not simply finding people willing to drive the trucks. He argued that qualified Kenyan drivers need legal opportunities to travel to the United States and work in the transport sector.
“Our government needs to sit down and ask: how can we help Kenyan truck drivers obtain the necessary visas and work permits to come here and operate these trailers?” Kinuthia said in the video.
He urged the Kenyan government to pursue bilateral agreements that would enable qualified drivers to access employment opportunities abroad through the appropriate immigration and work authorisation processes.
Kinuthia acknowledged the importance of creating jobs within Kenya but argued that the country should also explore legitimate employment opportunities overseas, particularly where businesses are struggling to find workers.
He described the situation as a missed opportunity for both Kenyan job seekers and business owners whose investments remain unproductive while the necessary workforce is unavailable.
