Political parties have called for reductions in the fuel price to be extended until the country’s next budget is tabled in February next year.

As the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party labelled the impending two-month fuel price cut an election ploy, the Treasury has defended the implementation date, saying it aligns with monthly fuel price adjustments that traditionally occur on the first Wednesday.

New fuel levy relief kicks in from November, but AA says temporary measure not enough

This happens to be the same day as next month’s local government elections.

The Treasury has been before Parliament’s finance committees today to explain the rationale for the adjustments made in the mid-term budget tabled by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana on Wednesday.

The price of fuel will drop by at least R1.50 per litre and diesel by R3 per litre on November 4, as Treasury again slashes the fuel levy to counter the impact of the oil price.

In December, those figures will be adjusted to R1 and R1.50 respectively until January 5.

ActionSA MP Alan Beesley is among those who today called for further relief.

ā€œThe reality of it is that the fuel price is still going to be high come January and I think a rational response would have been to allow the fuel levy relief to continue until the budget speech in February,ā€ said Beesley.

The MKP’s Thulani Gamede meanwhile wants the fuel levy to be scrapped completely.

He’s been sceptical of the timing of the latest reduction, saying the government did not stand to lose revenue.

This is because it has already earmarked R10 billion from the Central Energy Fund to offset losses from the fluctuating fuel price.

ā€œIt starts on 4 November, the day of the local government elections, which is hard to read as coincidence.ā€

But Deputy Director-General Chris Axelson said Treasury preferred to align its fuel levy relief to coincide with the monthly adjustments made to the petrol and diesel price by the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources.
