Just In: Kenya Met Issues Yellow Marine Weather Warning as Regions to Be Affected Emerge
The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a marine weather warning, cautioning fishermen, boat operators and other sea users about potentially dangerous conditions expected across Kenya’s coastal and offshore waters.
The warning highlights the possibility of rough to very rough seas, accompanied by strong to very strong breezes. Locally stronger winds may occur in some areas, increasing the risk for people operating vessels in exposed waters.
According to the marine forecast, east-south-easterly to south-south-westerly winds are expected to affect the coastal region and offshore waters. Wind speeds are projected to range between 4 and 24 knots, equivalent to approximately 2 to 12 metres per second.
Although sea conditions may vary from light to rough in different locations, areas experiencing stronger winds and higher waves could encounter very rough seas. The changing conditions may make navigation difficult, particularly for small boats and vessels that are more vulnerable to strong winds and large waves.
The warning is particularly important for fishing communities and people who depend on the Indian Ocean for their daily livelihoods. Fishermen venturing into the sea without checking weather updates or taking the necessary precautions could face serious risks if conditions deteriorate unexpectedly.
The department has advised mariners, fishers and other sea users to exercise extreme caution, especially in areas where rough to very rough seas are anticipated.
Operators of small boats and other vessels working in exposed waters have also been urged to take appropriate safety measures and remain alert to official marine weather updates before making decisions about their activities.
The warning serves as a reminder that marine weather conditions can change, making preparation essential for anyone planning to venture into the ocean.
Coastal residents and maritime operators are encouraged to follow updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department and prioritise safety whenever strong winds and high waves are expected.
