Enough Is Enough — Interior Minister Warns Bawku Residents Over Arms Ban

The Interior Minister has issued a fresh warning to people living in Bawku, insisting that the ban on carrying guns, ammunition and other offensive weapons must be obeyed by all residents. The minister cautioned that anyone caught breaking the rules would be dealt with according to the law.

The directive comes at a time when concerns remain over security in Bawku, where tensions and occasional violent incidents have continued to trouble the area. Officials are particularly worried about the presence of weapons despite existing restrictions.

The minister explained that the ban does not favour or exempt any particular group. Everyone, irrespective of political connections, social status or community background, is expected to comply with the directive.

“We cannot restore peace while weapons are freely carried,” the minister said, pointing to the need for stronger enforcement to prevent further violence.

As part of the effort, security personnel have been instructed to increase patrols, operate checkpoints and use intelligence to identify people who may be violating the restrictions. The government says it is adopting a firm position against the unlawful possession and carrying of weapons.

The public has also been urged to support the security agencies by reporting useful information about illegal arms and suspected violations. According to the minister, peace cannot be achieved through fear and intimidation but requires the active involvement of residents and authorities.

The minister acknowledged that people in Bawku have experienced fear and frustration because of the security situation. However, the government has maintained that protecting the lives and property of residents remains a priority, and those found with prohibited weapons could face prosecution.

The renewed enforcement effort reflects the authorities’ concern about the risks associated with the circulation of weapons in an area affected by recurring conflict. Officials hope that the arms ban, effective security operations and cooperation from local communities will help reduce violence and support a return to normal life.

Residents have been urged to respect the restrictions and avoid carrying prohibited weapons as the government continues its efforts to improve security and promote lasting peace in Bawku.
