NDC Suspends Daniel Nortey Indefinitely Over Remarks on Obuasi SHTS Sexual Abuse Allegations

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has indefinitely suspended Amasaman-based party communicator Daniel Nortey following controversial comments he made about the sexual abuse allegations involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Zakaria Abdulai.

The decision was announced by the party’s Communication Directorate in an official statement, confirming that the disciplinary measure takes immediate effect and will remain in force until further notice.

Nortey came under intense criticism after making remarks during a panel discussion on Accra-based ATV, where he appeared to downplay the seriousness of rape allegations and questioned whether the act was unusual.

During the discussion, he made statements that many listeners considered inappropriate and insensitive, particularly given the seriousness of the allegations surrounding the Obuasi SHTS headmaster.

ā€œHe’s a rapist, and so what? Haven’t you done that before? Is today the first time someone is raping someone?ā€ Nortey said during the programme.

He also directed a question at another panellist, asking whether the individual had ever raped someone before, further intensifying criticism of his contribution to the discussion.

The comments generated strong condemnation, with concerns raised about the manner in which he addressed an issue involving allegations of sexual violence.

Following the backlash, Nortey released a public apology in a video shared by Accra-based Okay FM on Facebook, expressing regret over his choice of words and asking for forgiveness from those who felt offended by his remarks.

He explained that the comments occurred during an intense exchange of views and were not an accurate reflection of his position on rape.

ā€œDuring the interview, we were having heated discussions, and so, in the heat of the moment, I ended up making such remarks, which I have regretted. So I am asking for forgiveness from Ghanaians and anyone who has been affected by my comments,ā€ he said.

The NDC communicator also appealed directly to women, the Ghanaian public and party officials to accept his apology, stressing that he did not condone sexual violence.

He further pointed to his relationships with female members of his family to emphasise his position, stating that he would not treat such allegations lightly if someone close to him became a victim.

ā€œI’m appealing to women and Ghanaians to forgive me. I have sisters and daughters as well, and there is no way I will support rape issues. In fact, if any of my female relatives becomes a victim, I will not take the issue lightly,ā€ he stated.

Despite his apology, the NDC has proceeded with the indefinite suspension, placing Nortey’s activities as a party communicator under a disciplinary measure that will remain effective until further notice.

The development comes as the allegations involving the Obuasi SHTS headmaster continue to receive attention, with Nortey’s comments becoming a separate source of controversy and prompting action from his own political party.
