Fire guts yam market at Zabzugu

Fire has gutted parts of the Zabzugu Yam Market in the Northern Region, destroying several stalls and their content.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said personnel from the Yendi Fire Station responded swiftly to a distress call received at 1302 hours on Monday.

It said the crew arrived at the scene within the shortest possible time and began firefighting operations to prevent the blaze from spreading to adjoining structures.

The GNFS said the fire was brought under control at 1415 hours and fully extinguished at 1435 hours.

Although several stalls and quantities of yam were destroyed, no casualties were recorded.

The operation was led by Divisional Officer Grade III (DO III) James Zooyar, Yendi Municipal Operations Officer, whose leadership, and the coordinated efforts of the crew, led to the successful salvage of some yam mounts and nearby residential buildings.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established as investigations are underway.
