Atwoli Weighs In on Sifuna’s 2027 Presidential Bid, Reveals Who Luhyas Will Support

Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has questioned Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s presidential ambitions while urging members of the Luhya community to support President William Ruto.

Atwoli’s remarks add to the growing debate over Sifuna’s decision to pursue the presidency ahead of the 2027 General Election. The senator has recently taken steps to establish his political platform after falling out with the Orange Democratic Movement.

Sifuna was unveiled as leader and preferred presidential candidate of The Equitable Party on October 4, 2026. The move placed him among the political figures seeking to challenge Ruto, although his campaign still faces the task of building a national support base.

Atwoli expressed doubts about Sifuna’s readiness to lead the country, according to the remarks cited in reports about the exchange. His assessment reflects his own political position and does not establish how voters will respond to Sifuna’s candidacy.

The trade union leader also called on the Luhya community to support Ruto in the next election. The appeal signals Atwoli’s preferred political direction as leaders seek support from different communities ahead of the polls.

The Luhya community is an important constituency in Kenya’s electoral politics, but its members do not necessarily support one candidate or party as a group. Individual voters make their choices based on varied political, economic and personal considerations.

Atwoli’s comments also come as opposition figures continue discussing whether they should field separate presidential candidates or unite behind one candidate. Sifuna’s emergence has added another option to those discussions, while other political leaders continue pursuing their own plans.

Neither Atwoli’s assessment nor his appeal determines the eventual direction of the 2027 contest. Sifuna’s campaign, the opposition’s coalition talks and the positions taken by political leaders will remain part of the debate as the election approaches.
