List of Couties to Receive Heavy Rainfall Starting Today Evening

The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast rainfall and thunderstorms across 18 counties over the next 24 hours, with the bulletin running from 9pm on Thursday, October 22, to 9pm on Friday, October 23.

Acting Director Edward Muiruri issued the forecast at 3pm on Thursday, advising residents of western, Rift Valley, central and southern Kenya to prepare for wet conditions.

The counties expected to receive rain are Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Kakamega, Kericho, Kisumu, Siaya, Vihiga, Nandi, Bomet, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Busia, Nakuru, Meru, Narok and Kajiado.

According to the county-by-county table, most of these areas will have partly cloudy skies overnight before clearing into sunny intervals in the morning.

The afternoon carries the highest risk of showers and thunderstorms, so people travelling or working outdoors during those hours are likely to face the most disruption.

Away from the rain, the department also flagged strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 metres per second) over parts of Turkana, Samburu and Marsabit counties.

Residents and travellers there have been urged to be cautious, since winds of that speed can affect road safety and outdoor activities.

The forecast covers some of the country’s most populated agricultural and urban zones, including parts of the lake region and the Rift Valley. Farming communities in those areas are likely to feel the effects of the weather pattern most.

Kenyans planning journeys or outdoor work in the affected counties have been encouraged to monitor conditions closely and adjust their plans where necessary.
