An Infected Person Cannot Spread Or Transmit Ebola To Others Until They Develop Symptoms–Atiku
According to a report by The Punch, on Thursday, October 22, 2026, The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over his comments on the government’s handling of an Ebola health emergency, accusing him of politicising a public health concern.
The council expressed its position in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Dele Alake. The council argued that public health emergencies require responsible communication and cooperation with medical authorities rather than political exchanges that could create confusion among Nigerians.
It particularly objected to remarks attributed to Atiku concerning President Bola Tinubu and the N10 billion reportedly approved to address the emergency. The council described the framing of the comments as inappropriate and disrespectful to the president.
The APC body also challenged Atiku’s concerns regarding the reported detection of a Nigerian who had travelled from Uganda and was said to be infected with Ebola. In defending its position, the council highlighted the disease’s incubation period, explaining that symptoms can emerge between two and 21 days after infection, although the timing varies among individuals.
The statement emphasised that understanding the disease’s transmission is essential when discussing suspected cases and the measures required to prevent further infections.
The council stated, “An infected person cannot spread or transmit Ebola to others until they actively develop symptoms.” It maintained that public discussions about the reported case should reflect established medical guidance and avoid statements that could mislead the public during an emergency.
Ebola is a serious viral disease that requires prompt detection, isolation of infected individuals and appropriate infection-control measures to limit its spread. Health authorities also rely on contact tracing and monitoring people who may have been exposed to the virus.
