Ghana will need a miracle to qualify for AFCON 2027 – Laryea Kingston
Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston believes the Black Stars will need a miracle to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations after losing their opening two matches in the qualifiers.
Ghana, four-time African champions, are bottom of Group C without a point following defeats by Ivory Coast and The Gambia.
The Black Stars began their campaign with a 2-0 loss to Ivory Coast in Bouake before suffering a 4-2 defeat by The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium, despite taking a two-goal lead.
The results have left Ghana facing an uphill battle to secure qualification for the tournament, which will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
Kingston, who serves as head coach of Uganda’s junior national teams, believes Ghana’s poor start has significantly reduced their chances of reaching the finals.
“Looking at the situation now, it will be a miracle for us to qualify,” he told 3Sports.
“Two teams have six points; it means Ghana will have to win all games. For me, it will be very difficult, and it will take a miracle to turn things around,” he added.
The disappointing results also contributed to the departure of head coach Carlos Queiroz, who resigned after Ghana’s opening two qualifying matches.
An interim technical team has since been appointed to oversee the Black Stars’ next two fixtures against Somalia in November as the Ghana Football Association and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation continue their search for a permanent head coach.
The interim team is led by Kim Lars Bjorkegren, with Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram serving as assistants and Fatawu Dauda as goalkeeper coach.
Ghana will need a significant improvement in results in their remaining fixtures to revive their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 AFCON and avoid missing out on another major continental tournament.
