3,000 Homes by 2029: State Housing Company Unveils Ambitious Plan to Tackle Ghana’s Housing Crisis

The State Housing Company Limited (SHC) has announced plans to deliver 3,000 housing units by the end of 2029 as part of efforts to expand access to accommodation and strengthen its contribution to Ghana’s housing sector.

Managing Director of the company, John Sherrif Bawah, disclosed the target during a working visit by the Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Ahmed Ibrahim, where discussions focused on the company’s operations, development priorities and strategies for improving housing delivery.

The ambitious target comes amid growing concerns about Ghana’s housing deficit and the need for sustainable approaches to provide decent and affordable accommodation for citizens.

According to Bawah, the company is pursuing several initiatives aimed at improving its operational capacity, diversifying its revenue streams and positioning itself to deliver more housing projects.

Beyond the planned construction of 3,000 housing units, the SHC is also working towards an urban redevelopment pilot project designed to explore opportunities for improving existing urban spaces and making better use of available land and infrastructure.

The initiative could provide a pathway for the company to contribute to the transformation of urban communities while addressing some of the challenges associated with housing demand and the management of developed areas.

Bawah further indicated that the company is strengthening its brand and expanding estate management and other revenue-generating services to improve its financial position and operational efficiency.

The strategy reflects an effort to reduce dependence on traditional housing development activities by exploring additional sources of income that can support the company’s long-term sustainability.

Effective estate management, in particular, could help improve the maintenance of properties, enhance service delivery to residents and generate resources for future investments.

The working visit by Ahmed Ibrahim also provided an opportunity to assess the company’s activities and examine how its plans align with broader efforts to address Ghana’s housing challenges.

The minister’s engagement with the company comes at a time when the search for practical solutions to the housing deficit remains an important national development priority.

However, achieving the 3,000-unit target will depend on several factors, including access to financing, land availability, construction costs and the effective execution of planned projects.

The company will also need to ensure that its housing initiatives respond to the needs of prospective homeowners and contribute meaningfully to improving access to accommodation.

If successfully implemented, the programme could strengthen the SHC’s role in housing delivery while creating opportunities across the construction industry.

With 2029 as its deadline, the company now faces the task of translating its ambitious target into completed homes for Ghanaians.
