Shivambu Admits Afrika Mayibuye Is Struggling Ahead of Election
Afrika Mayibuye Movement leader Floyd Shivambu has raised concerns about political violence ahead of South Africa’s 2026 Local Government Elections. He says his party is struggling to find a candidate willing to stand in Nongoma because people fear for their lives.
Nongoma is a municipality in the Zululand district of KwaZulu-Natal. Shivambu singled it out as a difficult place for political participation because of a history of killings that are allegedly linked to political tensions. He described it as an area where political killings have been a lasting problem, no matter which party a person belongs to. According to him, residents are unwilling to be linked to any political organisation because they are afraid for their safety.
This is a real challenge for Afrika Mayibuye as it tries to grow and recruit candidates before the municipal elections. Political violence has worried people in parts of KwaZulu-Natal for a long time. Attacks on political figures and candidates have shaken public confidence and made some people think twice about taking part in democracy.
Shivambu’s remarks show how the fear of revenge can stop ordinary people from standing for public office. When that happens, voters may end up with fewer choices on the ballot.
He said the problem is not limited to Nongoma. The movement has reportedly had trouble finding candidates in other places too, including parts of the Western Cape and the Namaqua district in the Northern Cape.
The situation raises questions about the safety of people who want to become councillors, as well as campaign volunteers and community members who wish to take part in the process. As parties prepare for the elections, candidates must be able to campaign without threats or intimidation if democratic rights are to be protected.
For Afrika Mayibuye, the search for a candidate in Nongoma shows what can happen when fear gets in the way of taking part in elections. Shivambu’s warning also draws fresh attention to the need for effective ways of protecting candidates, so that residents can choose their representatives freely without fearing for their lives.
