“Uza Zote”: Thika MP Alice Ng’ang’a Tells Ruto to Sell Kenya’s Assets to Fund Development
Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a has told President William Ruto that he can sell any of Kenya’s assets to raise money for the country’s development, including state-owned corporations such as the Kenya Pipeline Company.
In her remarks, the lawmaker argued that the President should be willing to consider selling national assets if doing so would help the government raise funds to finance development projects across the country.
“President Ruto, you are the President, so if you want to sell any of Kenya’s assets, just sell them so that we can get the money!” Ng’ang’a said.
Her statement appeared to support the idea of disposing of government-owned assets as one of the ways of mobilising resources for national development. She indicated that the assets under consideration could include parastatals and other state-owned entities, with Kenya Pipeline Company being one example.
The remarks touch on the wider debate over how the government should raise money to fund infrastructure, public services and other development programmes while managing the country’s financial obligations.
Selling state-owned enterprises can potentially provide the government with a one-off source of revenue, depending on the value of the assets and the terms of a transaction. However, such proposals can also raise questions about public ownership, the long-term income generated by the enterprises and the protection of national interests.
For strategic institutions such as Kenya Pipeline Company, any proposed sale would likely attract public scrutiny because of the company’s role in the country’s petroleum transportation and storage infrastructure.
Ng’ang’a’s comments add to the ongoing national conversation about the use of public assets to support government spending and development priorities.
The debate is likely to centre on whether selling state-owned assets is an appropriate way to raise funds, what safeguards would be necessary and how the proceeds would be used to benefit Kenyans.
Her remarks have drawn attention to the choices facing the government as it considers different ways of financing its development agenda.
