Meet Ukambani’s Richest Men: Mike Sonko And Harun Mwau’s Businesses And Wealth
Ukambani, a region in eastern Kenya comprising counties such as Machakos, Kitui and Makueni, has produced prominent politicians and entrepreneurs who have built substantial wealth through business and public service. Some of these individuals have invested in real estate, transport and other ventures, establishing themselves as well-known figures in Kenya’s economic and political landscape.
Among the wealthy personalities associated with the region are former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko and businessman Harun Mwau, whose careers have attracted considerable public attention.
Mike Sonko is one of Kenya’s most recognisable politicians, known for his flamboyant lifestyle and generous public displays of wealth. The former Nairobi senator and governor traces his roots to Machakos County.
Sonko reportedly began building his fortune through land transactions in Mombasa during the early 2000s. He later moved to Nairobi, where he ventured into the public transport industry.
His investments included a fleet of 10 matatus operating along the Buruburu-town route. The transport business helped establish his presence in Nairobi before he ventured into politics.
Sonko first entered Parliament after winning the Makadara constituency seat. He subsequently became Nairobi senator before being elected governor in 2017. Throughout his political career, he has remained a controversial yet prominent figure, frequently attracting attention for his expensive jewellery, luxury vehicles and public generosity.
Another businessman associated with Ukambani is Harun Mwau, a former Kilome Member of Parliament who has built a reputation as an influential entrepreneur.
Mwau has been linked to several companies, including Harun International Limited, Sheltown Limited, Mwundo Limited and Vitu Limited. His business interests and political career have kept him in the public spotlight for years.
He also served as the first director of the now-defunct Kenya Anti-Corruption Authority. However, his tenure lasted approximately one year before a tribunal removed him from office following questions about his suitability for the position.
Mwau has also faced international scrutiny, includingbeing flagged by United States authorities over alleged drug-trafficking links, allegations that should not be treated as proof of wrongdoing.
Together, Sonko and Mwau illustrate the diverse paths through which prominent personalities from Ukambani have pursued business and political influence in Kenya.
