First Individual s Placed Under Quarantine as Contacts of Ebola to be Discharged on This Day
The first people placed under quarantine after being identified as contacts of Ebola cases in Kenya are expected to be discharged on Sunday, according to Dr Patrick Amoth.
Amoth said the discharge exercise will be led by the Kenya National Public Health Institute (KNPHI), under its Acting Director-General, Dr Kamene Kimenye. The date given in the statement is Sunday, 25, 2026, which points to October 25.
The announcement marks a notable step in the country’s response to the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak. As of October 21, 2026, Kenya had recorded nine confirmed cases, all linked to a single cluster, and one death.
The index case was a Kenyan who had been living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) before travelling to Nairobi through Uganda. He arrived on October 3 and died two days later.
Health authorities have maintained that all the other cases trace back to that individual and that there is no evidence of widespread community transmission.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has also advised against blanket travel or trade restrictions, given the current picture of the outbreak.
Contacts of confirmed cases are typically monitored for 21 days, the standard period used in Ebola response. Discharging the first group suggests that those placed under quarantine early in the outbreak have completed the observation period without developing the disease.
However, the statement did not say how many people will be released, where they have been held or whether they will undergo final tests before leaving quarantine.
Other contacts identified later are expected to remain under observation until their own monitoring periods end.
The Kenyan government has urged the international community not to isolate the country, stressing that the outbreak is a limited and traceable cluster.
