Bucs’ latest signing could become a crowd favourite

Former Orlando Pirates defender Kamal Sait believes the club’s teenage signing, Edmilson Chaney, has the potential to establish himself as a popular figure at the Soweto giants.

The 19-year-old winger, popularly known as “Millies,” joined Pirates from Hope FC after an impressive campaign that saw the Cape Town-based side secure promotion. Chaney previously came through the Cape Town Spurs academy before making a name for himself in the lower divisions.

Last season, the talented attacker played an important role in Hope FC’s success, helping the club win the Western Cape ABC Motsepe League title and progress through the national playoffs.

Sait, who knows the demands of playing for Pirates, has spoken highly of Chaney’s abilities. He believes the youngster possesses the talent, determination and personality needed to connect with the club’s passionate supporters. According to Sait, Chaney could quickly become a fan favourite if he remains focused and makes the most of his opportunities.

Pirates reportedly faced competition from several other Betway Premiership clubs before securing the winger’s signature. Hope FC confirmed the move towards the end of August and wished Chaney well in the next stage of his career. The club described his journey as an example of its commitment to creating opportunities for young players to reach the highest level.

Although there was initially speculation that Chaney could be loaned back to Hope FC to gain more regular playing time, those plans did not materialise. Instead, the teenager is currently training with Pirates’ first-team squad under coach Abdeslam Ouaddou as the club looks to defend its league title.

Chaney impressed observers last season with his pace, positive attitude and ability to contribute goals from the wing. His performances also earned him a place in the preliminary South Africa Under-20 squad, further highlighting his potential.

Pirates have a history of developing promising young players into stars, and Chaney now has the opportunity to follow a similar path. However, he will first need to impress in training and take advantage when his chance arrives.

If he maintains his work ethic, stays humble and continues developing, Chaney could soon become another young player capable of winning over the Sea of Black and White.

His move also highlights how players from South Africa’s lower divisions can reach the top when given the right opportunity. Pirates have opened that door for Chaney, and the next step is for the teenager to show that he belongs at the highest level.
