SA fuel levy cut: R3 for diesel and R1.50 for petrol
The South African government has announced it will cut the diesel and petrol fuel levies to ease the imminent fuel price increases.
The South African government will lower its imposed fuel tax in a bid to reduce financial pressures of continuously rising fuel prices. The levy will be reduced by R3 per litre for diesel and R1.50 per litre for petrol from 4 November for one month. Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced this during the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement on 21 October.
Said Godongwana, āTo provide temporary relief, the fuel levy will be reduced by R3 per litre for diesel and R1.50 per litre for petrol from 4 November 2026 up until to 1 December 2026. Thereafter, the relief will continue at a lower amount until 5 January 2027. The diesel levy will be reduced by R1.50 per litre, and the petrol levy by R1 per litreā. The last time the South African government cut fuel levies was in April 2026 ahead of the soaring fuel and oil prices from the start of the war in the Middle East.
This is estimated to provide R10 billion in support for motorists, households and business revenue. āTo fund this support, the R10 billion that was transferred to the Central Energy Fund will be returned to the National Revenue Fund to finance this relief,” said Godongwana.
The reduction in fuel levies will reduce the price per litre of fuel for motorists. Based on the November 2026 fuel price forecast, this is what the projected fuel prices could be from 4 November…
