Black Farmer Explains How Afrikaner Neighbours Helped Him When Banks Rejected His Farm
A South African black farmer has shared how Afrikaner farming neighbours helped him keep his agricultural business going when banks and other businesses were unwilling to provide financial support.
The farmer recounted his experience during a podcast-style interview with Penuel, in a clip shared on Instagram by @penuel.clips on October 19, 2026. His account has resonated with social media users, many of whom responded with stories of receiving unexpected help from people of different racial backgrounds.
According to the farmer, he was struggling to secure backing for his 23,000-hectare farming operation after financial institutions turned him away. With few options left, he approached a friend who offered to help him through an arrangement based on trust rather than formal guarantees.
The farmer said his friend agreed to provide farming inputs and send two machines to assist with harvesting at the end of the season. The costs would be deducted from the proceeds, with the remaining profit handed over to him. The arrangement, he explained, was sealed with a handshake.
He also spoke about the assistance he has received from his neighbour, JP Meintjies, whom he described as one of the biggest farmers in the area.
After a transformer was reportedly stolen, leaving him without water for his sprayers, Meintjies allowed him to collect water from his farm. The farmer said the arrangement had continued for four seasons.
Meintjies also opened his financial records to him, allowing him to work through the figures with a full-time accountant. The farmer added that other white farmers had helped when he ran short of diesel or experienced equipment breakdowns, allowing him to settle costs when he could afford to pay.
Penuel shared a personal experience of his own, recalling how an Afrikaans-speaking man stopped to help when his car broke down near a small town. The man reportedly arranged a tow to a mechanic and refused payment.
The interview prompted a wave of responses from South Africans who shared accounts of kindness across racial lines. Some described receiving help with legal matters, vehicle breakdowns and career development.
The stories offered a different perspective from the racial hostility often highlighted in public debate. The farmer argued that extreme narratives do not necessarily reflect the relationships people build through everyday interactions.
The discussion has since become a reminder of how practical support and personal trust can cross racial boundaries in South Africa.
