Africa’s Richest Man Expands in East Africa With Major Kenya Pipeline Investment
Africa’s richest man, Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote, has reportedly acquired a 25% stake in Kenya Pipeline Company for 42.5 billion Kenyan shillings, approximately US$327 million, in a move that strengthens his group’s presence in East Africa’s energy sector.
The investment makes Dangote’s group the company’s second-largest shareholder and marks a significant development in the expansion of his energy interests beyond Nigeria.
Kenya Pipeline Company plays an important role in the transportation of petroleum products through Kenya’s pipeline network. The reported investment is expected to support the movement and distribution of petroleum products, reinforcing the importance of pipeline infrastructure in the region’s energy supply chain.
Kenya’s pipeline system serves as a key route for transporting fuel to different markets, making the company strategically important to petroleum distribution and regional trade.
The deal comes as Dangote expands his energy investments across Africa, with a growing focus on integrating refining, transportation, storage and distribution infrastructure.
The acquisition also comes as Dangote advances plans for a major oil refinery in Lamu, Kenya. The proposed facility is planned to have a processing capacity of 700,000 barrels per day, similar to the capacity of his refinery near Lagos, Nigeria. <Cite refs={[“turn131192news24″,”turn131192search2”]}/>
The refinery project could strengthen Kenya’s position in the regional petroleum industry and create opportunities to connect fuel production with distribution infrastructure. A stake in Kenya Pipeline Company could give Dangote’s business group an important interest in the network used to transport petroleum products to inland markets.
However, Dangote has not publicly identified which company within his business group acquired the pipeline shares. <Cite refs={[“turn131192search5″,”turn131192search10”]}/>
The investment follows Kenya’s efforts to open up Kenya Pipeline Company to private investors through a share sale on the Nairobi Securities Exchange.
Dangote’s latest acquisition signals a broader ambition to expand his business interests beyond Nigeria and strengthen his presence in African energy markets.
By investing in petroleum transportation infrastructure while pursuing a major refinery project, his group is positioning itself to participate in more stages of the energy supply chain.
The transaction also strengthens commercial links between Nigeria and Kenya, two major economies in their respective regions.
As plans for the Lamu refinery progress, the relationship between refining capacity and fuel distribution infrastructure will remain an important factor in Dangote’s wider East African expansion strategy.
