Suliman Carrim to Appear in Musina Court Over Alleged Attempt to Smuggle Absa Vehicles

North West businessman and former ANC regional treasurer Suliman Carrim is expected to appear in the Musina Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo on Thursday, 22 October 2026. He faces charges of attempted theft and money laundering linked to an alleged scheme to smuggle two Absa vehicles out of the country.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority in Limpopo, Carrim allegedly worked with his employees to steal the two vehicles. They are said to have used fraudulent bank documents to try to move the cars across the border. The vehicles were still under finance agreements with Absa at the time.

The case dates back to 22 July 2026. On that day, police stopped two suspects at the Beitbridge Border Post. The men were allegedly trying to take the vehicles into Zimbabwe. The cars had come from Mahikeng in the North West and were meant to go on to Malawi. Both vehicles have since been returned to Absa.

Carrim was arrested on 15 October 2026 at OR Tambo International Airport. He was about to board a flight to Dubai when police detained him. He already faces separate charges for failing to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. The Special Investigating Unit is also looking into multimillion-rand transport contracts in the North West that are linked to him.

The two suspects arrested at Beitbridge remain in custody. They are due to appear in the Musina Regional Court on 27 October 2026. Investigations into the alleged vehicle theft and the use of false documents are still continuing.

Carrim is a well-known figure in the North West. He has held senior positions in the ANC and has been involved in large government contracts over the years. The new charges add to the legal problems he is already facing. His lawyers have not yet commented publicly on the vehicle matter.

The case highlights ongoing efforts by police and the NPA to tackle alleged vehicle smuggling and financial crime. Court proceedings in Musina will show whether the state can prove its claims against Carrim and his co-accused. The public and the business community will be watching closely as the matter unfolds.
