“No Female Student Should Enter a Headmaster’s Office Without Another Teacher Present” – Buckman
According to a report by TV3 Ghana on 21st October 2026, the Deputy Communications Director of UP, Ebo Buckman, has proposed a new safety rule aimed at protecting female students in Ghana’s schools.
Speaking in the wake of the Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) sexual abuse issue, Mr. Buckman stated that “no female student should enter a headmaster’s office without another teacher being present.” The proposal comes at a time when public concern over the safety of students in educational institutions is growing.
The suggested rule is intended as a preventive measure. By ensuring that a second teacher is always present during any meeting between a female student and a headmaster, it would create accountability, discourage misconduct, and give students greater confidence when seeking help or attending official meetings.
Child protection advocates have long argued that safeguarding measures in schools should be proactive rather than reactive. Policies such as supervised one-on-one interactions are common practice in many education systems around the world, where they protect both students and staff. In that sense, Mr. Buckman’s proposal reflects a widely recognised principle of student welfare.
The proposal also raises questions about how it would be implemented. Education authorities, school management, and teacher unions would need to consider practical guidelines, including how the rule would apply in emergencies, how compliance would be monitored, and how students could report concerns safely and confidentially.
The Obuasi SHTS matter has once again drawn national attention to the need for stronger protection systems in schools. Stakeholders are expected to weigh in on whether the proposal should be adopted as formal policy by the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education.
As the discussion continues, one message is clear: the safety and dignity of every student must remain a top priority in Ghana’s educational system.
