Nico Paz delivered a masterclass, scoring twice and providing an assist as Cesc Fabregas’ side dismantled the English club at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia.
The Argentine playmaker opened the scoring just two minutes into the contest, punishing United’s slow start and setting the tone for an evening that quickly turned disastrous for the visitors.
Amid the early setback, United struggled to establish control as Como dictated the tempo and created problems for their visiting opponents but couldn’t extend their advantage in the opening half.
The hosts carried their slender advantage into the break before producing a devastating second-half performance.
Four minutes after the restart, Paz turned provider, setting up Anastasios Douvikas to double Como’s lead in the 49th minute.
Paz then struck again in the 57th minute to make it 3-0, completing his three goal contributions and leaving United with little hope of salvaging the contest.
Jacobo Ramon added the fourth in the 76th minute, capping an outstanding performance from the Italian side and underlining the gulf between the teams on the night.
Joshua Zirkzee grabbed a consolation goal in stoppage time, but it did little to soften the scale of United’s defeat.
The victory marked Como’s second win in three Champions League league-phase matches on their debut season in the competition. Fabregas’ side had opened their European campaign with a 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig before losing 3-2 to Feyenoord in their second outing and their response against United was emphatic.
The defeat leaves Carrick facing mounting scrutiny as United’s disappointing campaign continues to unravel.
United had already lost 2-0 to Atletico Madrid in their previous Champions League outing on October 13, making the Como result their second consecutive defeat in the competition.
Their campaign began positively with a 4-0 victory over Sabah FK on September 10, but subsequent performances have raised serious questions about their consistency, defensive organisation and ability to compete against Europe’s stronger sides.
The loss also extends United’s winless run to seven matches across all competitions, increasing pressure on Carrick to find an immediate solution.
Having been handed the permanent managerial position following his earlier spell in charge, Carrick is now under scrutiny over whether he can reverse the team’s decline and restore confidence within the squad.
The latest setback also revives broader concerns about the club’s recruitment strategy and the resources available to the coaching staff. Defender Lisandro Martinez has previously expressed frustration over United’s limited transfer activity, adding to the questions surrounding the club’s decision-making.
However, the problems exposed against Como went beyond recruitment. United struggled to contain Paz, failed to respond effectively after conceding and repeatedly allowed the hosts to exploit weaknesses in their defensive structure.
Carrick must now find a way to restore organisation and confidence before the pressure surrounding his position becomes even more difficult to manage.
The club’s upcoming fixtures, including a Champions League meeting with Roma on November 3, will provide further tests of his ability to steady the team.
The result also alters Manchester United’s recent record against Italian opposition in European competition.
Before Wednesday’s encounter, United had lost just two of their previous 16 matches against Italian clubs, recording 10 wins and four draws. They had also lost only once in their previous eight away matches in Italy.
Como’s victory therefore represents a significant setback against a country whose clubs have historically provided formidable opposition for the English side.
United have enjoyed memorable European victories over Italian teams, most notably their 7-1 demolition of Roma in the 2006-07 Champions League quarter-finals. They also defeated Juventus during their famous 1998-99 campaign, which culminated in winning the European Cup.
However, their record has not been without painful defeats. AC Milan eliminated United in the 2004-05 and 2006-07 Champions League campaigns, while Juventus have also proved difficult opponents over the years.
Wednesday’s defeat is particularly striking because it came against a club making its debut in UEFA competition. Como have quickly established themselves as an exciting attacking side under Fabregas, and their performance demonstrated the effectiveness of their tactical approach against a struggling opponent.
For United, the immediate concern is their position in the Champions League league phase. They must recover quickly if they are to finish among the top eight and qualify automatically for the round of 16, avoiding the additional knockout play-off round.
Como, meanwhile, will take confidence from a result that strengthens their European ambitions and announces their arrival on the continental stage.
For Carrick, the defeat leaves little room for complacency. United’s defensive frailties, poor run of results and growing uncertainty over their direction have combined to make the coming weeks crucial for both the manager and the club.
