Reps Warns As FG Breaks Silence On Fresh Ebola Case Confirmed In Abuja

According to a report by The Punch on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, the House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to immediately ramp up preventive and emergency medical measures across the country following the confirmation of an Ebola Virus Disease case in Abuja.

Lawmakers issued the warning during Wednesday’s plenary session presided over by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, following a motion of urgent public importance moved by Amobi Ogah.

According to the parliament, the confirmed patient is a female traveler who arrived in Abuja from Uganda and subsequently tested positive. Health authorities have already traced and isolated 44 contacts for close monitoring and further laboratory testing.

Expressing deep concern, the House warned that any delays in tracking suspected cases, running prompt laboratory tests, isolating infected individuals, and securing adequate medical supplies could overwhelm the country’s healthcare system.

To avert a wider crisis, the parliament urged the Ministry of Finance to immediately disburse all outstanding appropriated funds to key health agencies.

Lawmakers emphasized that these financial resources are crucial for boosting active surveillance, scaling up contact tracing, and equipping isolation and treatment centers.

Furthermore, the House mandated its Committee on Infectious Diseases to closely monitor the situation through active engagement with relevant ministries, departments, and public health institutions, and report back for necessary legislative actions.

Medical experts continue to remind the public that Ebola spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids of symptomatic individuals, making early detection and strict hygiene protocols vital.
