Nationwide Meter Audit: How to verify the identity of ECG field personnel

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced a nationwide meter audit exercise across all its operational areas, aimed at reducing commercial losses, improving revenue assurance and combating electricity theft.

In a public announcement issued on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, the company said the exercise would involve inspecting and verifying all prepaid and postpaid meters, Special Load Tariff installations and associated wiring to confirm the integrity of metering systems and ensure accurate measurement and billing of electricity consumption.

The company said the announcement served as official notice of the exercise, and that no further prior notices, appointment letters or advance notifications would be issued.

It advised customers, landlords, estate managers, property managers, facility managers and security personnel that the absence of a separate notification letter should not be used as a basis for denying, restricting or delaying access to authorised personnel.

The company urged customers to verify the identity of field personnel before granting them access, using two channels.

Customers can call the company’s Customer Call Centre on 0302 611 611 or use the *226# USSD verification code on all mobile networks.

To use the USSD verification code, customers should dial *226# on their mobile phone, select Option 5 for Verify Staff, and enter the six-digit verification code provided by the staff member. The system will then display the staff member’s full name, region and district, which the customer should confirm matches the person at their door.

The company said all employees and authorised agents participating in the exercise would carry official identification cards.

The company reminded the public that Regulation 4(h) of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (Customer Service) Regulations, 2020 (L.I. 2413) provides that a consumer shall grant an employee or agent of a public utility safe and reasonable access to the premises, subject to the production of a verifiable identity card, to read a meter or check utility equipment.

Here are the five steps outlined by the Electricity Company of Ghana for verifying the identity of field personnel using the USSD code:
