Shuaib Walters Returns to Scotland to Complete Final Phase of UEFA B Coaching Licence

Mamelodi Sundowns development goalkeeping coach Shuaib Walters has returned to Scotland to complete the final stage of his UEFA B coaching licence at Oriam, Scotland’s national performance centre.

The former goalkeeper confirmed his progress in a post on X, writing: “Back at Oriam completing the final phase, practical assessment.”

Walters is working towards completing the qualification as he continues his coaching career with Sundowns, where he is responsible for helping develop the club’s next generation of goalkeepers.

His return to Scotland marks an important step in his professional development, with the practical assessment forming part of the final phase of the coaching programme. The qualification is designed to strengthen coaches’ understanding of training methods, tactical principles and player development.

Goalkeeping coaches play a crucial role in modern football, helping players improve their reflexes, positioning, distribution, communication and decision-making. They must also ensure that goalkeepers understand how to contribute to their teams’ defensive organisation and build-up play.

At Mamelodi Sundowns, Walters works within a development structure focused on preparing young players for the demands of professional football. Completing the UEFA B licence would further support his efforts to improve his coaching knowledge and apply modern training methods to the development of emerging goalkeepers.

The qualification also reflects the growing importance of continued education among football coaches, particularly those working with young players. Technical knowledge, practical experience and the ability to adapt training to individual needs are essential elements of effective player development.

Walters’ progress towards completing the licence highlights his commitment to expanding his expertise beyond his experience as a former goalkeeper. His work at Sundowns gives him an opportunity to apply that experience while helping young talents build the skills needed to advance in the game.

His practical assessment at Oriam represents the final phase of the programme, bringing him closer to completing the UEFA B coaching qualification.
