Nyaope topped the list of illegal products found on inmates, followed by 20 cellphones found on prisoners.

The national commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), Makgothi Thobakgale, directly led an unannounced search operation at the Klerksdorp Correctional Facility in the North West province on Tuesday night, 20 October.

The physical drill resulted in the safe confiscation of cellphones, drugs, and other prohibited items and substances.

According to Thobakgale, the massive operation aims to reinforce the department’s commitment to strengthening security, combating contraband, and maintaining safe and secure correctional facilities.

The operation resulted in the successful confiscation of various prohibited items, including 20 cellphones, 40 packets of nyaope, six Mandrax tablets, 15 USB devices, three sharp objects, one solar panel, one ball of dagga, three homemade speakers, one radio, 37 SIM cards, three cellphone batteries, and a single pair of scissors.

“The department emphasises that the fight against contraband requires a collective effort, as corrections is a societal responsibility. Members of the public are urged not to supply offenders with prohibited items or participate in activities that facilitate their entry into correctional facilities.

“Those found to be involved in such activities may face arrest and criminal prosecution. DCS officials are also warned against participating in the smuggling or supply of contraband. Any official found guilty of such misconduct will face appropriate disciplinary action and may also be subject to criminal prosecution,” he said.

He finally added that the department will deliberately continue to intensify security operations and thoroughly strengthen measures to prevent the entry of prohibited items into correctional facilities.
