Zanetor Rawlings labels galamsey chemical warfare, demands fast courts
The Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has called for the establishment of fast-track environmental courts to ensure the speedy prosecution of individuals involved in environmental offences, particularly illegal mining, popularly known in Ghana as galamsey.
The minister likened illegal mining involving hazardous chemicals to chemical warfare, warning that the practice poses serious threats to human health and the environment. She stressed that the consequences of galamsey go beyond environmental destruction and have become a growing public health concern.
During a tour of parts of the Eastern Region, Dr Agyeman-Rawlings expressed concern about illegal mining activities at Osino. According to the report, some of the mining operations were taking place less than 200 metres from a major road, raising concerns about the location and potential risks associated with the activities.
She called on the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to intensify efforts to combat illegal mining and strengthen measures to protect communities from its harmful effects.
The minister’s call for fast-track environmental courts is aimed at ensuring that cases involving environmental destruction are handled more quickly. Such courts could help reduce delays in prosecuting offenders and strengthen the enforcement of environmental laws.
Illegal mining remains a major challenge in Ghana because of its effects on water bodies, forests, farmlands and the livelihoods of communities. The use of hazardous chemicals in mining activities can also contaminate water sources and expose people to serious health risks.
Dr Agyeman-Rawlings’ remarks highlight the need for stronger enforcement, effective coordination among security agencies and faster legal processes to address environmental offences.
Her position also underscores the importance of treating galamsey as both an environmental and public health issue, requiring sustained action to protect Ghana’s natural resources and the well-being of its people.
