Former Chiefs Star Blasts Lack of Leadership in Current Dressing Room

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Thabiso “Skapie” Malatsi has delivered a strong critique of the senior players currently at the club, arguing that a lack of leadership in the dressing room is contributing to Amakhosi’s struggles.

Speaking to KickOff, Malatsi pointed to the team’s early-season form of just one win in six league matches and a nine-point gap behind Mamelodi Sundowns. He believes the problems run deeper than results and start with the attitude of the more experienced players.

“These people are not serious. Even the senior players at Chiefs these days, they are not leaders. They don’t motivate and encourage these young players that playing for this badge is not for everybody,” Malatsi said.

The former midfielder suggested that the current crop of senior figures fail to instil the standards and pride traditionally associated with wearing the Kaizer Chiefs jersey. In his view, true leaders should push younger teammates to understand the responsibility that comes with representing the club.

Malatsi’s comments come at a time when the Soweto giants continue to search for consistency in the Betway Premiership. The side’s modest start has already left them trailing the league leaders by a significant margin, prompting renewed scrutiny of both performance and internal culture.

As a former player who came through the ranks at Naturena, Malatsi spoke from personal experience of what he believes the badge demands. He expressed concern that the absence of strong senior leadership is leaving younger players without the necessary guidance and motivation.

The criticism adds to ongoing discussions about the standards expected at one of South Africa’s biggest clubs. While the focus often falls on results and coaching, Malatsi has shifted attention to the role of experienced players in setting the tone inside the dressing room and preparing the next generation for the demands of the badge.
