“Two Lawyers Who Preach Democracy Are Now Shamelessly Praising Wamunyoro” Makau Mutua Questions
Law professor Makau Mutua has sparked fresh political debate after criticising Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and former Law Society of Kenya president Faith Odhiambo for meeting former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
His remarks followed a gathering at Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County, where leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement held talks about cooperation ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a post shared on October 21, Mutua questioned the two lawyers’ decision to engage with Gachagua, arguing that their actions contradicted their public positions on democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
He concluded his criticism with the pointed phrase, “Chameleons before Baba.”
His comments added another layer to the debate surrounding the opposition’s changing political relationships.
The meeting took place on October 20, shortly after Gachagua returned to Kenya from the United States.
Sifuna led a delegation of Linda Mwananchi leaders to the former deputy president’s residence, with Faith Odhiambo, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and other political figures among those present.
Gachagua welcomed the visitors and expressed optimism about working together.
Following the engagement, Sifuna described the meeting as the beginning of further discussions aimed at strengthening opposition unity before the next election.
The talks have fuelled speculation about a possible political arrangement between Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party and leaders associated with Linda Mwananchi.
However, neither side announced a formal coalition agreement after the meeting.
Mutua’s criticism reflects a wider disagreement over whether political cooperation should take priority over past differences between leaders.
Supporters of the engagement may see it as an opportunity to build a stronger opposition, while critics question whether the partnership is consistent with the values its participants have previously promoted.
With the 2027 election approaching, the debate over political principles, alliances and leadership is likely to continue.
