Dr Matthew Reportedly Collapses and Dies During Hotel Encounter
Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, a senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU) in Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria, has reportedly died after being found unresponsive in a hotel room following an encounter with a 21-year-old woman. The incident has attracted public attention, while police continue investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to the Edo State Police Command, the incident was reported on October 5, 2026, at about 8 p.m. The lecturer had reportedly checked into a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma with a woman identified by police as Angela Defa Jacob.
Police spokesperson Eno Ikoedem said the lecturer later asked the woman to go out and purchase water for him. When she returned to the room, she reportedly found him lying dead. The circumstances leading to his death remain under investigation.
Following the discovery, police arrested three people in connection with the investigation: the woman, the hotel owner and the hotel manager. Authorities said the individuals were assisting investigators as they worked to establish what happened before the lecturer was found dead.
His remains were subsequently deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary. Police have not publicly confirmed the cause of death, and the reported encounter has not been established as the cause of the fatal incident.
The development has also drawn attention within the academic community. University officials confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of the institution’s academic staff but clarified that the incident occurred outside the university campus. They also stated that the woman involved was not a student of the university.
The lecturer’s death has raised questions about the events that occurred during his final hours and what might have led to the emergency. However, investigators will need to rely on medical findings, witness statements and other available evidence to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
As the investigation continues, the arrested individuals have not been established as responsible for his death. Their arrest does not prove wrongdoing, and the cause of death remains unconfirmed.
Authorities are expected to establish the facts surrounding the incident as the investigation progresses.
