Electricity Bills: PURC Unveils Tool to Help Consumers Detect Billing Errors

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has urged electricity consumers to use its Tariff Reckoner software to verify their electricity bills and report any discrepancies for investigation.

The Commission said the digital tool allows consumers to calculate their electricity charges based on their monthly consumption and compare the results with bills issued by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Wednesday, October 21, PURC Executive Secretary Dr Shafic Suleman encouraged consumers to take advantage of the software to determine whether they were being charged accurately for the electricity they used.

He explained that the Tariff Reckoner was developed to empower consumers to independently assess their bills instead of relying solely on the amounts charged by ECG.

According to Dr Suleman, the software is available on the PURC’s official website, while the Commission has been educating the public on how to access and use the platform.

He said consumers could enter their electricity consumption details into the software to generate an estimated bill and compare it with the amount charged by ECG.

Where discrepancies arise, consumers are encouraged to lodge a complaint with the PURC, which can investigate the matter and establish whether the charges are accurate.

Dr Suleman further explained that consumers who remain uncertain about their bills could submit formal complaints to enable the Commission to guide them through the necessary procedures.

He emphasised that the process was intended to ensure that consumers paid for the electricity they actually consumed and could seek clarification or redress whenever they had concerns about their bills.
