Police-MTTD send important message to Ghanaians over car ownership

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) has advised vehicle owners to properly transfer ownership at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) within two weeks of selling a car.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the Director of Education, Research and Training, ACP Alex Obeng, stressed that receiving money for a vehicle is not enough to complete a sale.

“Once you sell a car, it is not just about taking money for it. If you are the bona fide owner, within two weeks there must be a change of ownership,” he said.

He explained that the seller must go to the DVLA and remove their name from the vehicle register so that the new owner’s name can replace it.

“If you haven’t done that, it means you haven’t sold the car. It is only the removal of the name from the register that confirms the car has been transferred,” ACP Obeng stated.

The MTTD officer also issued a strong warning about vehicles without number plates.

“Henceforth, cars without number plates will be a thing of the past. You cannot own one, let alone drive it,” he said.

According to him, anyone who needs to move an unregistered vehicle must obtain a trade licence plate.

“You must have a trade licence plate if you want to move it, because if something happens, how do we trace the car?” he asked.
