What Mackenzie Did To His Children When They Refused To Pray
Dan Mackenzie, a son of Shakahola cult leader Paul Mackenzie, has described his father as evil as he recounted how he escaped from the forest. Speaking in an interview on Citizen TV, he said he got out together with five of his siblings, a survival story that sheds light on what life was like inside the compound.
According to Dan, the children were made to fast without food or water. He said this was part of the rules enforced by his father and that nobody was allowed to question them. His account matches what other survivors have said about the fasting that took place in the forest, where authorities later exhumed hundreds of bodies.
He also claimed that the children faced violence whenever they failed to follow the religious routine. Dan said they were beaten for missing church services, and that attendance was treated as compulsory regardless of how weak they were. In his telling, prayer was enforced through fear, and punishment followed any sign of refusal.
Dan did not hold back in his judgment of his father. He called him evil, a strong statement from a son who lived under his roof and watched the teachings turn into harm. He did not say how long the family was kept under those conditions before he managed to leave, and the details of the escape were not spelled out in the clips shared online.
His testimony comes after Mackenzie was found guilty of 191 counts of murder, a ruling that has kept the Shakahola tragedy in the public eye. Many Kenyans have focused on the victims and their families, but accounts from the cult leader’s own children offer a rare view of how the rules were applied at home.
