Meet Sahith Theegala’s Indian Parents Who Supported His Rise To Golf Stardom

Sahith Theegala has established himself as one of the promising talents in professional golf, with his journey to the top shaped by the support and sacrifices of his parents, Muralidhar and Karuna Theegala.

Born on December 4, 1997, in Orange, California, the American professional golfer is of Indian descent and grew up in Chino Hills, California. His parents were born in India before immigrating to the United States in search of opportunities and a better future.

Muralidhar Theegala played a significant role in nurturing his son’s interest in golf. He pursued his education in the United States before building a career as an engineer at the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.

Despite challenges, including racial discrimination, Muralidhar remained supportive of his son’s ambitions, encouraging him to pursue the sport and develop his talent.

Karuna Theegala has also been an important source of encouragement throughout Sahith’s career. However, the family has faced a difficult period as she battles cancer. Her support has remained an important part of the golfer’s journey.

Sahith also has a younger brother, Sagan Theegala, with whom he shares his family background and upbringing.

The golfer’s talent became evident during his time at Pepperdine University, where he emerged as one of the outstanding collegiate players in the United States. In 2020, he won three prestigious honours: the Haskins Award, Ben Hogan Award and Jack Nicklaus Award. He was also a three-time NCAA All-American.

Theegala turned professional in 2020 and began working towards establishing himself among the world’s best golfers. After competing on the Korn Ferry Tour, he earned his place on the PGA Tour for the 2021-22 season.

His breakthrough came on September 17, 2023, when he won the Fortinet Championship, securing his first official PGA Tour title. He also impressed at the 2023 Masters Tournament, finishing tied for ninth place on his debut.

Off the course, Theegala has been linked to Julianna Chan, an American professional swimmer who also works as a customer success manager.

Through his achievements, Theegala continues to inspire aspiring golfers, particularly young athletes from immigrant families and diverse backgrounds.
