Ugandans Recorded Saying They Wish They Had William Ruto as Their President for 40 Years

Ugandan social media users have joined Kenya’s affordable housing debate, publicly asking Kenyans to hand over President William Ruto in exchange for Yoweri Museveni after the Eldoret housing handover.

Ruto handed over keys to 2,157 homeowners at the KSh5.3 billion Pioneer Affordable Housing Project in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.

The estate has 15 residential blocks of 14 floors each, 104 shops, a kindergarten, a clubhouse, a swimming pool, basketball and football courts, a gym and a clinic.

The online exchange began when user @Kirya_Ug wrote, “Kenyans give us this man and we give you Museveni.”

He argued that after four decades of Museveni’s rule, traders in Kampala can no longer afford rent, and that KSh620,000, roughly the cost of a one-bedroom unit at Pioneer, cannot secure even a studio room in Uganda.

Other users agreed. Kalubya said Kenya would be better than Singapore had Ruto ruled for 40 years, while Phiona Kyeru wondered what makes Kenyans dislike a leader who appears to work hard.

User @ameliame777 suggested Kenya take Muhoozi and give Uganda Ruto, calling Kenyans “very ungrateful people.”

At the ceremony, Ruto compared the estate to Singapore, saying Kenya had already arrived before it even started.

Units are offered in several price bands. Social housing one-room units cost KSh640,000, with monthly repayments of about KSh3,800 under the Tenant Purchase Scheme, while two-room and three-room units go for KSh960,000 and KSh1.28 million.

Affordable studios cost KSh1 million, with two-bedroom and three-bedroom units at KSh2 million and KSh3 million. Market-rate two-bedroom and three-bedroom units are KSh3.6 million and KSh4.8 million.

While beneficiaries have welcomed the project, critics at home question whether the prices truly serve low-income earners, citing high taxation, production costs and public debt. The government has planned 12,429 more units worth KSh29.9 billion in Uasin Gishu.
