“Why can’t we have two, three men as husbands”– Stephanie Benson on multiple partners and marriage

Ghanaian-British singer Stephanie Benson has sparked a discussion about gender roles in relationships after suggesting that women should have the freedom to marry or maintain relationships with more than one husband.

According to a GhanaWeb report published on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, Benson made the comments during an interview on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz programme.

Benson argued that society has historically been more accepting of men having multiple partners while placing stricter expectations on women. She questioned why women should not be given similar freedom if they are capable of maintaining multiple relationships.

“I think it’s about time women have more than one husband,” she said during the discussion.

The singer maintained that women are often underestimated when it comes to their ability to manage relationships with more than one partner. She suggested that women who remain committed to one man often do so because of loyalty and dedication rather than an inability to handle multiple relationships.

Benson also argued that having more than one husband could allow women to receive different forms of companionship and support. She referenced the various responsibilities women already handle, including caring for children, while questioning why they should be restricted to having only one partner.

She further indicated that she personally believed she could manage two or three husbands if such an arrangement were socially accepted.

The remarks were later shared by Hitz FM on X, where the interview clip attracted attention and reactions from social media users.

Benson has previously spoken publicly about marriage and relationships, including comments warning that certain friendships could negatively affect marriages.

Her latest position is expected to generate further debate in Ghana over marriage, gender expectations, commitment and whether relationship standards should be applied equally to men and women.
