Ryan Giggs Receives Special Invite to Manchester United Champions League Fixture
Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has reportedly received an invitation to attend the club’s Champions League encounter with Como on Wednesday, giving the former winger an opportunity to reunite with familiar faces in Italy.
Giggs enjoyed an illustrious career at Old Trafford during Sir Alex Ferguson’s tenure, establishing himself as one of the most successful players in the club’s history. His achievements included 13 Premier League titles, two Champions League trophies and four FA Cups.
The Welshman spent 24 years in Manchester United’s first team, making a club-record 963 appearances, a milestone that remains unmatched.
After retiring from professional football, Giggs transitioned into coaching, initially serving as an assistant manager at United before taking charge of the Wales national team in January 2018, succeeding Chris Coleman.
During his time with Wales, he worked alongside Osian Roberts, who had previously assisted Coleman and helped the national team reach the semi-finals of Euro 2016.
Roberts, now head of development at Como, has invited Giggs to attend Wednesday’s European fixture at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium. Speaking to The Sun, Roberts expressed his happiness about the visit and explained that the pair had remained in contact since their time working together with Wales.
Their plans reportedly extend beyond the senior match, with the two expected to watch Como’s Under-19 side. Giggs is also likely to meet Como head coach Cesc Fabregas during his stay.
As Wales manager, Giggs oversaw 25 matches, recording 12 wins and guiding the team to qualification for Euro 2020. The tournament was postponed until 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He left the role in November 2020, after which Robert Page took charge.
Giggs remains particularly celebrated for his European achievements with United. He scored against Juventus in the 1999 Champions League semi-final and featured in the 2008 final, when United defeated Chelsea on penalties in Moscow.
He also made 145 Champions League appearances and scored 28 goals, further underlining his enduring legacy in European football.
