Kipchoge Keino Stadium’s Troubled Past and the Real Reason It Hosted Mashujaa Day 2026
Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, took centre stage on October 20, 2026, when Kenya held its Mashujaa Day celebrations at the facility after abandoning plans to use Kamariny Stadium in Iten, Elgeyo-Marakwet County.
The decision brought national attention to a sporting venue whose history stretches back decades, marked by major athletics events, football competitions and repeated attempts to upgrade its ageing infrastructure.
Named after legendary Kenyan athlete Kipchoge Keino, the stadium was established to serve Eldoret and the wider North Rift region. Keino earned international recognition through his performances in middle-distance running and became one of the pioneers who helped establish Kenya as a global athletics powerhouse.
Born on January 17, 1940, in Kipsamo, Nandi County, Keino won Olympic gold in the 1,500 metres at the 1968 Mexico City Games before adding another gold in the 3,000 metres steeplechase at the 1972 Munich Olympics. He also secured silver medals in the 5,000 metres and 1,500 metres respectively.
In 2012, World Athletics inducted him into its inaugural Hall of Fame in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the sport.
The stadium has hosted football matches involving local clubs, including Rivatex and Eldoret KCC. It also served as a training ground during preparations for the 1988 All-Africa Games and hosted Kenya’s athletics trials ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympics.
However, efforts to modernise the facility have faced years of delays. In 2007, the government allocated KSh100 million for renovations, but progress remained slow. Further reconstruction plans introduced in 2016 also encountered setbacks, with audit inspections identifying unfinished sections and stalled construction work.
The planned transformation gained fresh urgency as Kenya prepared to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
Upgrades have targeted floodlights, the playing surface, VAR technology, CCTV, modern changing rooms, medical facilities, media areas and an international-standard athletics track.
The Ministry of Defence later took responsibility for supervising the reconstruction as the government pursued plans to bring the stadium closer to international standards.
Kipchoge Keino Stadium was selected for Mashujaa Day 2026 after construction delays affected Kamariny Stadium, the original venue for the national celebrations.
The government moved the event to Eldoret to ensure the October 20 celebrations proceeded as scheduled, while maintaining that work at the Iten facility would continue.
