The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has directed Zakaria Abdulai, headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), to withdraw from its ongoing internal election process while the police investigate allegations of sexual misconduct against him.

The decision was announced in a statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

According to the NDC’s Functional Executive Committee (FEC), the directive is intended to ensure that the investigation proceeds without interference and that the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service can carry out its responsibilities independently.

The committee said the decision demonstrates the party’s commitment to transparency, accountability and due process in dealing with the allegations.

The latest announcement follows an earlier statement issued by the party on Monday, October 19, concerning the accusations against Abdulai.

However, the NDC stressed that its decision to have him step aside should not be interpreted as a determination of his guilt. It maintained that he remains entitled to the presumption of innocence until the allegations are properly investigated and addressed through the appropriate legal procedures.

The party called on the police to conduct a comprehensive, impartial and timely investigation into the matter. It also expressed confidence in the ability of the investigative authorities to handle the case professionally.

The FEC indicated that the findings of the police inquiry would inform the party’s subsequent decisions regarding the issue.

As part of the implementation process, the Ashanti Regional Election Committee and the Juaben Constituency Election Committee have been instructed to take note of the directive and ensure that the necessary steps are taken.

The allegations against Abdulai attracted increased public attention following an investigative report by journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni. The claims reportedly concern alleged sexual harassment and assault involving female students at the school.

The case has generated public debate over the allegations and the party’s handling of Abdulai’s participation in its internal electoral activities.

By directing him to step aside pending the outcome of the investigation, the NDC has sought to allow the police inquiry to proceed while maintaining that the accusations must not be treated as proven facts before the due process is completed.

The police investigation is expected to provide the basis for determining the appropriate next steps as the matter unfolds.
