Obuasi SHS Allegations: Zakaria Abdulai Steps Down From NDC Position and Chairmanship Race

Zakaria Abdulai, headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), has resigned as the Juaben Constituency Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and withdrawn from the party’s constituency chairmanship race amid sexual misconduct allegations involving female students.

In a letter announcing his decision, Abdulai indicated that both his resignation and withdrawal from the contest would take immediate effect.

His decision comes amid growing public scrutiny of the allegations, which have prompted investigations by the Ghana Education Service (GES) and a referral to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

The development also follows deliberations by the NDC’s Functional Executive Committee (FEC) over his continued participation in the party’s ongoing constituency elections.

In a statement issued on October 19, the party disclosed that it had initially considered requesting Abdulai’s voluntary resignation or disqualifying him from the Juaben Constituency chairmanship contest.

However, after inviting him to present his side of the matter and reviewing reports from a GES investigative committee, investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni and Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, the party decided against disqualifying him at that stage.

The NDC explained that its position was guided by the principles of fairness, natural justice and the presumption of innocence, given that the allegations remained subject to a criminal investigation.

Abdulai has now chosen to relinquish his constituency secretary position and withdraw his candidacy for the chairmanship, amid the continuing controversy.

In his resignation letter, he expressed appreciation to friends, relatives and well-wishers who had supported him throughout the situation, particularly those who continued to believe in his innocence despite the allegations.
