Bamburi Cement Owner Expands Into Tanzania’s Fuel Distribution Business
Tanzanian businessman Edha Nahdi is expanding his business empire after Amsons Group agreed to acquire the downstream petroleum business of Oryx Energies in Tanzania.
The deal adds to the group’s growing investments in the energy sector, following its acquisition of Kenya’s Bamburi Cement, one of the country’s established cement manufacturers.
Oryx Energies confirmed on October 16 that it had signed an agreement to sell its Tanzanian downstream oil business to Amsons Group. The transaction is part of the company’s strategy to review its investments in Africa.
The acquisition will give Amsons access to Oryx’s existing fuel distribution network and storage infrastructure in Tanzania, strengthening its position in the petroleum and logistics industries.
Amsons Group Managing Director Edha Nahdi said the investment was an important step in the company’s expansion plans. The group intends to use the acquired assets to strengthen fuel distribution and support Tanzania’s position as a regional logistics hub.
For Oryx Energies, the sale will allow the company to redirect resources towards other energy infrastructure projects and trading activities across Africa.
The latest transaction comes less than two years after Amsons completed its takeover of Bamburi Cement in Kenya. In December 2024, the group secured control of approximately 96.4% of the cement manufacturer’s shares in a deal valued at billions of shillings.
The acquisition marked a major step in Amsons’ expansion into the Kenyan market, adding a significant cement producer to its existing investments in manufacturing and energy.
Founded in Tanzania, Amsons Group has built a presence in several African countries, with interests spanning cement, petroleum products, gas, transport and logistics.
Its latest move into Tanzania’s oil business further strengthens its position in the regional economy as the company continues to pursue opportunities across different industries.
The financial value of the Oryx transaction was not disclosed in the announcement, and the acquisition remains subject to the applicable transaction requirements.
