Former ANC Members Strip Off Shirts Mid-Event, Stamp Them Into Dirt — Joining MK Party

Green-and-yellow shirts ended up in the dirt on Wednesday afternoon when a group of former ANC members tore off their clothing in full view of a crowd and stamped on the crumpled fabric. Moments later, they pulled on the red-and-black of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party. What started as an ordinary political rally turned into a tense display of defection that left onlookers gasping, and several people recorded every second on their phones.

Witnesses say at least fourteen people arrived wearing ANC gear, walked to an area near the stage, and took off their shirts one by one before swapping them for MK Party merchandise. The old shirts were thrown on the ground instead of being set aside, and many in the crowd saw this as a deliberate and dramatic move. Some say organisers had arranged the change of clothes in advance, with fresh stock handed out just before the switch became visible to everyone.

An MK Party spokesperson confirmed that the new members had submitted their membership paperwork before the event. “These individuals exercised their democratic right to align themselves with a movement they believe represents their aspirations,” the official told journalists outside the venue. At the time of publication, the ANC’s regional office had not released a response.

Tensions between the two parties across KwaZulu-Natal have been rising since the 2024 general elections, when the MK Party won a significant swing of votes in several municipalities. ANC ward structures have reported a growing number of resignations, especially among younger members who say they are frustrated with internal governance problems and service delivery issues that remain unresolved. This defection is the most visually striking break in the ongoing rivalry so far.

One elderly woman at the back of the crowd held her ANC cap tightly the entire time, her eyes fixed on the abandoned shirts lying in the dirt. Her jaw was set and her grief was obvious. She said nothing. She just watched.

The shirts are still lying where they were dropped. Nobody has come back to collect them or explained why they were discarded that way. Whether this marks the start of a wider exodus from the ruling party in the region, or was simply a staged performance made for the cameras, is a question no one in that crowd could answer yet.

Was this a genuine act of political conviction, or just a well-timed show for the cameras? Tell us in the comments: do you think public defections like this actually change voter loyalty, or are they all theatre?
