Jordaan Crosses Fingers Over Mbokazi as Pitso Could Face Defensive Selection Dilemma

South African football figure Irvin Khoza has expressed optimism about Mbokazi’s potential impact, suggesting that the defender’s inclusion could give coach Pitso Mosimane a positive selection headache as he considers his defensive options.

Speaking about the situation, Khoza highlighted the quality available in the defensive department and suggested that adding Mbokazi to the group could give the coach even more options when selecting his team.

“I think it will give coach Pitso a good problem, that he has many high-quality defenders, which now will include Mbokazi,” he said.

The comment points to the value of having several capable defenders competing for places in a squad. While coaches must make difficult decisions about their starting line-ups, having quality alternatives can help maintain competition and provide cover when injuries, suspensions or changes in form affect team selection.

Mbokazi’s potential inclusion could therefore strengthen the options available to Pitso, depending on his readiness, performances and the team’s tactical requirements. The defender would have to compete with other players for a place, but his presence could offer the coach another option when assessing the best defensive combination.

For a coach, having depth in defence can be particularly important during a demanding schedule, when teams may need to rotate players across domestic and international competitions. Strong competition can also encourage players to maintain high standards in training and matches.

However, the presence of several quality defenders does not automatically guarantee success. The coach must still identify the right partnership and ensure that the players work effectively within the team’s overall system.
