Video Shows Beautiful Four-Lane Road Where Akufo Addo’s Statue Once Stood In Takoradi

A newly shared social media video has highlighted the transformation of the Effia-Nkwanta–Sekondi road in Takoradi, with particular attention being drawn to the roundabout where a statue of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo used to stand.

The footage shows the road looking largely finished, with the completed sections significantly changing the appearance of the surrounding area.

The road was developed during Akufo-Addo’s presidency to make transportation between Sekondi and Takoradi more convenient. It also improved access to the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital, benefiting people travelling by vehicle as well as those moving on foot.

After the project was completed, some residents chose to recognise the former president by putting up a statue in his honour at the roundabout near the hospital.

The statue was unveiled on November 6, 2024, during Akufo-Addo’s visit to the Western Region as part of his “Thank You Tour.” Its pedestal carried a message expressing appreciation from the people of the Western Region.

The monument, however, did not remain intact for long. Part of the statue was damaged in December 2024 and was later fixed.

A more serious incident occurred between January 12 and 13, 2025, when unknown individuals reportedly vandalised and destroyed the entire structure. The statue’s head was removed, while several other parts were left around the location.

The destruction caused widespread anger among residents, prompting the police to launch investigations. Despite the investigations, no suspect has been publicly identified as responsible, and the monument has yet to be reconstructed.

In the latest video, the roundabout is instead surrounded by a smooth four-lane road that gives the location a noticeably different appearance. The road surface looks neat and well-finished, while the surrounding area appears more orderly.

Motorists and other road users have welcomed the development, with some saying the improved road has made movement through the area easier and safer.

The video has attracted positive reactions from social media users who are impressed by the appearance of the completed road. However, others have focused on the empty centre of the roundabout, noting the absence of the statue that was once erected there to commemorate the former president.

For some residents, the vacant spot remains a reminder of the controversial destruction of the monument less than two months after it was unveiled.
