Truphena Muthoni Breaks Silence Over Her Short Skirt, Here’s What She Has Told Kenyans
Environmental activist Truphena Muthoni has responded to criticism over her choice of clothing during this year’s Mazingira Day celebrations, explaining why she wore a short skirt to the event.
Muthoni, who has gained national and international attention for her environmental conservation efforts, found herself at the centre of an online debate after photos of her wearing a short black skirt and colourful braids during the celebrations circulated on social media.
The 22-year-old environmentalist attended the event as a guest speaker on October 10, 2026, at Thogoto Teachers Training College in Kiambu County. While some Kenyans praised her confidence and defended her right to choose what to wear, others questioned whether her outfit was appropriate for a public environmental event.
Speaking during an interview, Muthoni explained that she dresses according to how she feels and does not always see things from the same perspective as those criticising her.
“I dress the way I feel I want to do. And my life is a sport, by the way,” she said, adding that she considered her outfit part of her personal expression.
She also addressed concerns about the length of her skirt, revealing that she had worn shorts underneath.
“And inside that skirt was a short, very decent short. So people should stop overthinking,” Muthoni explained.
The activist admitted that she understood why some people had reacted to her appearance but maintained that she felt comfortable with what she wore.
“I recognise that how I dress affects how people feel, and that is good,” she said.
During the interview, the host questioned whether wearing trousers or a longer dress would have been more suitable for an event attended by different groups of people.
However, Muthoni maintained that the occasion was an environmental event rather than a church service, suggesting that people should not impose the same expectations on every gathering.
She also acknowledged that her outfit had bothered some people but did not indicate that she regretted her decision.
The debate comes as Muthoni continues to attract public attention for her environmental campaigns. In January 2026, Guinness World Records officially recognised her achievement of hugging a tree for 72 consecutive hours in Nyeri County in December 2025, surpassing her previous 48-hour record.
