Tony Gachoka Says Sifuna Has Strongest Mathematical Path to Defeat Ruto
KANU spokesperson Tony Gachoka has argued that Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna offers the opposition its strongest mathematical route to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election, while insisting that his position is not intended to undermine Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
Gachokaās argument centres on the ability of an opposition candidate to unite voters across different regions and political camps. He believes Sifuna could help bring together voting blocs whose combined support would strengthen the oppositionās challenge to Ruto.
Gachoka has previously highlighted the importance of Western Kenya and Mount Kenya in determining the outcome of the next presidential election.
He has argued that Sifunaās potential support in Western Kenya, combined with backing from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and voters in Mount Kenya, could create a substantial electoral coalition.
The political calculation rests on a simple idea: an opposition candidate needs more than popularity in one region to mount a serious national campaign. Building alliances across multiple voting blocs could be decisive, although the actual outcome would depend on voter turnout, candidate selection and the distribution of votes nationwide.
Gachokaās remarks also bring attention to the competition over who should lead the opposition into the 2027 election.
Kalonzo has remained an important opposition figure, while Sifuna has attracted growing attention following his political disagreements within ODM and the emergence of his Linda Mwananchi movement.
A Politrack Research Team survey published by The Star on October 1, 2026, placed Sifuna at 19.6 per cent among presidential preferences, ahead of Kalonzo at 10.3 per cent. President Ruto led the overall presidential preference poll at 45.1 per cent. These figures reflect that particular survey, not the eventual election result.
The figures offer context for the debate over opposition leadership, but a poll alone cannot establish which candidate has the strongest electoral coalition or will win in 2027.
The Challenge of Building One Opposition Coalition
The opposition faces the task of reconciling competing presidential ambitions and agreeing on a candidate capable of attracting support beyond individual parties and regions.
Gachokaās argument suggests that electoral arithmetic should be central to those discussions. However, combining estimated regional support does not automatically translate into votes, and alliances must still secure public backing and effective nationwide mobilisation.
With the election approaching, the question remains whether opposition leaders will agree on a common candidate or enter the race divided.
Do you think Edwin Sifuna could unite enough opposition support to challenge William Ruto in 2027, or should Kalonzo Musyoka lead the opposition instead? Share your views in the comments.
